Historia
Prvé vozidlá boli poháňané parou. V roku 1769 francúzsky vojak Nicolas Cugnot zostrojil parný voz na ťahanie kanóna (Cabriot). Pohyboval sa približne rýchlosťou 5 km/h a musel každých 10 minút zastaviť, aby sa vyrobila nová para. Pre predné koleso s dvomi piestami vyrábal paru veľký medený kotol umiestnený vpredu. Lenže pri prvej jazde sa vozidlo rozbilo, pri náraze do steny.
Richard Trevithick z Anglicka staval skúšobné cestné vozidlá. Začiatkom štyridsiatych rokov predminulého storočia pravidelne premávali na linkách z Londýna a do Londýna parné dostavníky. Boli však nemotorové, komplikované a ničili cesty. V roku 1859 Etienne Lenoir z Belgicka zdokonalil nový, ľahší typ motora.
Palivo – uhoľný plyn – spaľovalo sa vo valci, namiesto spaľovania uhlia mimo parného kotla. Tomuto procesu sa hovorí vnútorné spaľovanie. Neskôr Nicholas Otto vynašiel štvortaktný cyklus, čím umožnil vznik výkonnejších motorov. Už vtedy sa v Spojených štátoch amerických vyrábal benzín – palivo oveľa vhodnejšie na použitie ako uhoľný benzín. Po tom, ako sa začali konštruovať vozidlá, ktoré spájali novú technológiu s ideálnym palivom – benzínom, už nič nebránilo prudkému rozmachu motorových vozidiel.
Roku 1874 sa vo Viedni objavilo vozidlo so štvortaktovým motorom a štyrmi kolesami, nazývané prvým autom. Nejazdilo však na benzín, ale na uhoľný plyn, preto sa z neho nikdy nemohlo stať dobre fungujúce vozidlo. Ľudia sa sťažovali na hluk, ktorý spôsoboval primitívny motor a kovové obruče kolies. Jeho konštruktér Siegfried Marcus sa nakoniec tohto projektu vzdal.
V 80. rokoch 19 storočia Karl Benz a Gottlieb Daimler nezávisle od seba skonštruovali benzínový motor. Roku 1885 Karl Benz vyrobil trojkolesové vozidlo, prvý osobný automobil, ktorý sa verejne predával zákazníkom – Motorwagen. Na rozdiel od iných "áut" to nebol len upravený konský koč. Benzov automobil bol od základu konštruovaný ako motorové vozidlo s oceľovým podvozkom.
V 90. rokoch 19.storočia Francúzi René Panhard a Emile Levassor zostrojili prvý osobný automobil s motorom vpredu (dnes už má väčšina áut takto umiestnený motor).
Prvé autá boli vyrábané ručne a boli dosť drahé, takže si ich mohli dovoliť iba bohatí ľudia. Roku 1902 mladý mechanik zo Spojených štátov amerických založil automobilovú spoločnosť, ktorá niesla jeho meno – Ford. Toto meno sa stalo jedným z najznámejších na svete a Model T – najslávnejším Fordovým autom. Henry Ford chcel skonštruovať natoľko cenovo dostupné auto, aby si ho mohla kúpiť každá rodina. Na rozdiel od konkurentov ponúkal len jeden model, čím udržiaval nízku cenu. Model T sa začal roku 1909 predávať za 850 dolárov, ale o sedem rokov neskôr klesla jeho cena na 260 dolárov! V priebehu niekoľkých rokov Ford zdvojnásobil počet áut v Spojených štátoch amerických. Továrne v Austrálii, Nemecku a vo Veľkej Británii tiež vyrábali Model T alebo "Tin Lizzie" (Plechová Líza), ako sa ľudovo tomuto autu hovorilo.
Do roku 1927, keď sa Model T prestal vyrábať, bolo vyrobených 15 miliónov kusov. Najúspešnejšie auto všetkých čias je VW Beetle – 20 miliónov kusov do roku 1983.
